Tongkat Ali for Men: Does It Work, Is It Dangerous, How Long to Take It (Singapore 2026)

Short answer: Tongkat ali may work, modestly, for some men: it is a traditional Southeast Asian root used for men’s energy and vitality, and small studies in adult men suggest possible benefits for energy, stress and general well-being, but the evidence is limited and nowhere near the dramatic results many listings promise.

Short-term studies in healthy adult men generally report it as well accepted; the bigger risks are products with undeclared medicines or heavy metals, and use alongside medication or a heart, blood pressure or liver condition, so ask your doctor first. If you want it in a tested daily blend, tongkat ali leads the six botanicals in EROJAN Men’s Energy Capsules, which we sell in Singapore.

Here are straight answers to the questions men ask most about tongkat ali. Where we mention our own product, we only use what our Singapore product page states.

What is tongkat ali?

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a slender tree from the rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. In Indonesia it is called pasak bumi. The part used is the root, which is very bitter: traditionally it was boiled into a tea, and today it is sold as root extract in capsules, powders and coffee mixes. Our EROJAN page sums up the tradition: tongkat ali has been used for generations in Southeast Asia for men’s energy and vitality.

Does tongkat ali actually work?

The honest answer has three parts.

  • There is some research. Tongkat ali has been studied in people. Small studies in adult men have looked at energy, mood and stress, exercise and hormone markers, and several report modest positive results.
  • The research is limited. Most studies are small and short, many use one standardised root extract, and many are funded by extract makers, so results do not automatically apply to another product.
  • Expectations matter. It is not a stimulant, it does not replace sleep, food or training, and it is not a medicine. If you have ongoing tiredness or low mood, see a doctor first; a blood test can rule out causes a supplement cannot fix.

Reviews and Reddit threads are personal stories about unknown products and doses: anecdotes, not evidence.

Is tongkat ali dangerous? Side effects and the liver

For most healthy adult men taking a clean product at the labelled dose, tongkat ali is generally reported to be well accepted in short-term studies. Some people report restlessness, irritability or trouble sleeping. The bigger risks are elsewhere:

  • Adulterated products. Men’s “power” supplements are a category where undeclared medicines have turned up, and Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority regularly publishes alerts about such products.
  • Heavy metals in poorly controlled herbal products.
  • The liver. Liver problems have been reported with some herbal supplements. If you have a liver condition, ask your doctor first, and stop and see a doctor if you notice yellowing skin or eyes or dark urine.
  • Medication and medical conditions, especially heart or blood pressure conditions.

This is why we point to EROJAN’s papers: the Toxicology Laboratory of the National Poison Centre, Universiti Sains Malaysia, screened the capsules for 26 undeclared drugs by GC-MS and detected none, and Bio Synergy Laboratories detected no arsenic, cadmium, lead or mercury. Our page also says EROJAN is for adult men, and that if you take medication or have a medical condition, such as a heart or blood pressure condition, you should ask your doctor before you start.

How much tongkat ali per day, and how long to take it?

There is no single official dose. Extracts differ in strength, so the milligrams on two labels are not directly comparable: follow the directions on the product you buy. Studies have usually run for several weeks to a few months, and there is no agreed rule about taking breaks; if you plan to take it long term, review it with your doctor.

EROJAN’s directions are two capsules once a day, after a meal, with water, every day, and no more than 2 capsules a day. Our page sets out what most men notice: in weeks 1-2 they feel fresher and more energetic and sleep better; by weeks 3-4 (bottle 1) they have more stamina for work and training; with 2-3 months (3 bottles) their stamina and vitality stay up. Results vary from person to person.

Is tongkat ali halal? And in pregnancy?

The root is a plant, so the halal question is about the capsule shell, processing and certification. For EROJAN, Halvec Laboratories, a JAKIM panel laboratory, detected no porcine gelatin or porcine meat in the capsule or the powder. Our page does not state a halal certificate, so check the label if certification matters to you.

Tongkat ali is not for use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and it is not for children. EROJAN is made for adult men only.

Tongkat ali vs maca vs ashwagandha

  • Tongkat ali: a Southeast Asian tree root, traditionally used for men’s energy and vitality.
  • Maca: an Andean root vegetable eaten as an energising food; our page notes maca has been grown high in the Andes for centuries as an energising food.
  • Ashwagandha: an Ayurvedic herb traditionally used for stress and sleep. It has its own cautions (thyroid conditions, pregnancy, some medicines), so ask a doctor before you combine it with anything.

They are often combined. EROJAN contains tongkat ali and maca, together with Tribulus terrestris, Epimedium, Butea superba and Cuscuta chinensis; it does not contain ashwagandha.

Men’s energy supplements: what to look for

Whether you search for a “men power supplement” or “men’s energy pills”, the same checklist applies: named ingredients with Latin names; a clear daily dose and maximum; a caution line about medication; a drug screen and heavy-metal test you can read; modest claims; and a seller you can trace. EROJAN’s page shows its lab reports whole, as they were issued.
