A topical NMN serum is a cosmetic that works on how your skin looks, which is a different thing from oral NMN supplements, and independent research on NMN applied to skin is still early. Use it like any serum: a few drops on clean skin, morning and night, before moisturiser and sunscreen. Our FEMOIRE Youth Serum combines NMN with an anti-wrinkle peptide and 8 types of hyaluronic acid.
Most answers to “what is NMN good for?” mix up skincare and supplements. Below we separate the two and show where our serum fits, using only what our Singapore product page says about FEMOIRE.
What is NMN and what is it good for?
NMN, short for nicotinamide mononucleotide, is a naturally occurring molecule made from vitamin B3 (niacin) building blocks. The body converts it into NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme that cells use to turn food into energy. NAD+ levels are generally understood to fall with age, which is why NMN became a popular “youth” ingredient.
So what is it good for? As an oral supplement, research in people is still young and mixed, so talk to a doctor first. In skincare, it is used for the look of radiance and freshness. Our FEMOIRE page describes it as the youth ingredient, for skin that looks brighter, smoother and more youthful, and says NMN, with 10 calming herbs, helps skin look brighter, more even and years fresher.
Can you get NMN naturally from food?
Yes, in small amounts. NMN occurs naturally in foods such as edamame, broccoli, cabbage, cucumber, avocado and tomato. The amounts are tiny compared with supplements, and no food puts NMN on the surface of your skin; a varied diet and a serum do different jobs.
NMN serum vs oral NMN supplements
They are different products with different jobs:
- NMN serum: a cosmetic applied to the face and neck. It acts where you put it, on how the skin looks and feels. FEMOIRE Youth Serum is a cosmetic for external use.
- Oral NMN: a capsule or powder you swallow, sold as a supplement. Its rules, doses and questions are different, and it is not something we cover here.
“Is NMN FDA approved?” Regulators generally do not approve cosmetics or supplements before sale the way they approve medicines, and rules on NMN as an oral supplement ingredient differ between countries and have changed over time, so check current local guidance. For a serum, the more useful question is what tests the product has passed. Our FEMOIRE page shows its test reports: SGS lab tests found no hydroquinone, tretinoin or parabens, no heavy metals and no harmful microbes, and dermatological tests rated it mild, gentle and hypoallergenic.
NMN serum vs NAD+ serum
NAD+ is the coenzyme itself; NMN is one step before it. Some brands use one, some the other, and some use niacinamide, a related B3 form with the longest skincare track record. How much topical NMN or NAD+ reaches living skin cells is not well established, so judge any of them on how your skin looks after weeks of use, and on the rest of the formula.
That is why FEMOIRE does not rely on NMN alone. Our page lists four actives: the 3rd Gen Youth Peptide, an anti-wrinkle hexapeptide that targets the look of crow’s feet, smile lines, frown lines, forehead lines and neck lines; NMN; 8 types of hyaluronic acid to hydrate; and Calming VIO, 10 herbal extracts including centella asiatica and aloe vera.
How do I use an NMN serum?
As a general rule: cleanse, apply a few drops to face and neck, massage in, then moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning. NMN serums layer easily with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide; if you use a retinoid or strong acid, introduce one new product at a time and patch test.
FEMOIRE’s own directions: a few drops morning and night on face and neck, massaged gently until absorbed; in the morning, follow with your moisturiser and sunscreen. Two to three times a week, glide the rose quartz Rose Beauty Stone that comes with it over the serum. Our page says that in week 1 skin feels plumper and softer and fine lines look less deep, and by day 28 wrinkles look visibly smoother and skin looks firmer, lifted and brighter. Results vary from person to person.
Is NMN serum safe in pregnancy, and is it halal?
Pregnancy: there is little research on NMN in pregnancy, topical or oral, so ask your doctor first. Our FEMOIRE page says the same: if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under a doctor’s care for your skin, ask your doctor before use, and stop if irritation occurs.
Halal: it depends on the product, so look for a certificate rather than assuming. FEMOIRE Youth Serum is certified halal by JAKIM. It contains no alcohol, steroids, mineral oil, colouring or artificial fragrance, and it is vegan-friendly and not tested on animals.
