What is grape seed extract good for?
Grape seed extract comes from the seeds of wine grapes (Vitis vinifera), one of the richest food sources of proanthocyanidins, a family of plant polyphenols. Research has looked mainly at three areas:
- Antioxidant support: helping the body handle free radicals from sun, haze, smoke, stress and late nights.
- Circulation and blood vessels: small studies in adults have looked at blood flow and blood pressure, with modest and mixed results.
- Skin: interest centres on protecting collagen from oxidative stress; evidence in people is still limited.
Some searches ask about grape seed for the kidneys or for blood sugar. It is not a treatment for any kidney, blood-sugar or other condition; if you have one, talk to your doctor before adding any supplement.
What are OPCs, and what does “95% OPC” mean?
OPC stands for oligomeric proanthocyanidins, the antioxidant compounds of the grape seed. They dissolve in both water and fat. “95% OPC” describes standardisation: the extract is made to a fixed OPC content, so every batch delivers a known, consistent amount, unlike plain ground seed powder. When comparing products, look for both numbers: milligrams of extract and the % OPC.
Is it good to take grape seed extract every day? How much?
Grape seed extract is usually taken daily. There is no single official daily amount, so follow your label. For BIO Grape Seed, that is one tablet after each meal, three times a day, with water; the label allows 1 to 2 tablets three times a day after meals. One bottle of 90 tablets lasts 30 days at one tablet a meal, and we suggest at least 90 days (3 bottles). Results vary from person to person.
Side effects: what should not be taken with it?
General health references describe grape seed extract as usually well tolerated by adults at label amounts; mild complaints such as headache, nausea or an upset stomach have been reported in some people. The bigger point is interactions: grape seed extract may affect blood clotting, so if you take blood-thinning medicine or daily aspirin, or have surgery coming up, ask your doctor first. No common vitamin is generally known to clash with it (vitamin C is a frequent partner), but if you take any prescription medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

How do I choose a grape seed extract in Malaysia?
- Standardisation: milligrams of extract plus the % OPC on the label.
- KKM registration: a MAL number printed on the label, which you can check on the NPRA website.
- Source and extraction: where the grapes come from and how the extract is made.
- Halal and vegan: look for a currently valid certificate, and read the full ingredient list for the tablet binder or capsule shell.
- Sealed stock at a believable price: listings far below the usual price may be old or badly stored.
Is it the same as grape seed oil? No. Grape seed oil is pressed from the seeds for cooking and skincare; it is mostly fat and not standardised for OPCs. BIO Grape Seed is a tablet of extract, not an oil.
