Black Seed (Habbatus Sauda) Oil: Benefits, How to Take It and Side Effects (Malaysia 2026)

Short answer: Black seed oil, pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa (habbatus sauda or jintan hitam in Malay), is valued mainly for thymoquinone, an antioxidant compound that researchers are studying for its role in immune and general health.

Most of that research is laboratory work or small human studies, so think of black seed oil as a nutritious food oil, not a medicine, and ask your doctor first if you take medicine or are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you would rather not take the oil straight, AFYAA Hayyiba is a halal ready-to-drink sachet with Thymocid® cold-pressed black seed extract and seven more ingredients, one sachet a day after a meal.

This guide sticks to what can be checked: what black seed is, what research does and does not support, how to take it, who should be careful, and how a black seed drink compares. We are an authorised AFYAA seller, so we also explain where Hayyiba fits, with no testimonials.

What is black seed, and what is it called in Malay?

Black seed is the seed of Nigella sativa, a small flowering plant from south-west Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean. Its seed pods hold small, angular black seeds with a sharp smell and a slightly bitter, peppery taste; black seed oil is pressed from them.

In Malay it is habbatus sauda (also spelt habbatussauda or habbatul saudah, from the Arabic for “black seed”) or jintan hitam; labels also say black cumin or kalonji. In Islamic tradition it is mentioned in the hadith and valued as a sunnah food. That standing is religious and traditional; it does not mean black seed replaces medical care.

Black seed oil benefits: what research supports, and what it does not

Researchers have studied black seed and thymoquinone for antioxidant properties and for their role in the immune system, mostly in laboratory and animal studies, plus small, short human trials using different doses. The results are interesting, but not strong enough for firm promises.

  • Reasonable to say: black seed is a nutritious food that contains antioxidant compounds and can be part of a balanced diet.
  • Still being studied: specific effects on immunity, skin and digestion. Human evidence is limited and mixed.
  • Not supported: claims that black seed oil can replace treatment for illnesses. If you are under a doctor’s care, keep taking your medicine and keep your appointments.

Searching “black seed oil benefits for men”? There is no good evidence that it works differently for men and women; the same guidance applies to everyone.

What is thymoquinone?

Thymoquinone is the black seed compound researchers study most. It sits in the oil of the seed, so pressing and storage matter: heat, light and air break delicate compounds down. A thymoquinone percentage on a label is useful when the maker can back it with a lab report. In Hayyiba, the black seed is Thymocid®, an extract cold-pressed to keep its nutrition and rich in omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and thymoquinone.

How to take black seed oil or capsules

  • Oil: usually in small amounts, on its own or stirred into honey or warm water. Do not fry with cold-pressed oil, and start small because the taste is strong.
  • Capsules: the easiest option if you dislike the taste; swallow after a meal.
  • Seeds and honey: toast the seeds briefly and sprinkle over rice or bread, or crush them into honey, a long-standing pairing in Malay and Middle Eastern kitchens.
  • Drinks: black seed coffee or a ready-to-drink sachet such as Hayyiba.

There is no single official dose for everyone: follow the label and do not exceed it.

Does black seed oil have side effects or interactions?

In food amounts, black seed is generally well tolerated. With large amounts of oil or capsules, watch for:

  • Stomach: nausea or bloating in some people.
  • Skin: oil applied directly can cause a rash on sensitive skin; patch-test first.
  • Medicines: black seed can interact with some medicines, including blood thinners. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, never stop or change your medicine on your own, and mention it before any operation.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: do not take oil or capsules without your doctor’s advice.

Black seed oil capsules vs a black seed drink like Hayyiba

Oil and capsules give you black seed alone, in concentrated form. AFYAA Hayyiba is a ready-to-drink 20 ml sachet that combines Thymocid® black seed extract with Polypeptide-k (PPk) bitter gourd seed extract, gymnema sylvestre, cinnamon, noni (mengkudu), misai kucing, B-complex and chromium, in a sweet and sour calamansi and sea coconut drink. In AFYAA’s own words, Hayyiba supports your immune system and your overall wellbeing, and the B vitamins are nutrients that help produce energy.

Drink one sachet a day after a meal, straight from the sachet, at least 2 hours apart from medicine. A tin holds 15 sachets and lasts 15 days; 2 tins are a full month. Our product page does not state the Thymocid amount per sachet, so check the tin for the exact figure. Our price is RM160 a tin or RM285 for 2 tins, with free delivery on every pack.

In short: oil or capsules for black seed alone; Hayyiba for an easy, pleasant daily habit with herbs and B vitamins added.
