Drinks That Help You Sleep: Chamomile, Cherry Juice, Milk Peptides and Sleep Supplements Compared (Malaysia 2026)

Short answer: The drinks that help you sleep are mostly warm, caffeine-free and part of a steady bedtime routine: chamomile tea, warm milk, tart (sour) cherry juice and other herbal teas are the classic choices, and the biggest win is often cutting coffee, teh tarik, cola and alcohol in the evening.

Sleep supplements can help some people, but pick one with clear lab and KKM papers, and see a doctor if poor sleep lasts for weeks. If a busy mind keeps you awake, our RELAZZ sleep drink is a 20 ml sachet of Lactium®, a French milk protein hydrolysate, with kiwi and L-theanine, taken about an hour before bed; it is not a sleeping pill.

Here is what the common bedtime drinks offer, what quietly ruins sleep, how sleep supplements compare and where a milk-peptide sleep drink fits. We sell RELAZZ; where we mention it, we quote only our Malaysia product page.

What drinks help you sleep?

A cup of chamomile tea, a mug of warm milk and a glass of tart cherry juice with fresh cherries
Chamomile tea, warm milk and tart cherry juice, the classic bedtime drinks
  • Chamomile tea. Naturally caffeine-free, and it contains apigenin, a plant compound thought to act on the brain’s calming receptors. Research is modest, but a hot cup is an easy wind-down signal. Skip it if you are allergic to daisy-family plants, and ask a doctor if you are pregnant.
  • Other herbal teas. Valerian root, lemon balm, passionflower and lavender are traditional bedtime herbs. Valerian can add to the effect of sleeping medicines, so check with a doctor if you take any.
  • Warm milk. Milk contains tryptophan, an amino acid the body uses to make sleep-related messengers. The amount in a glass is small, so much of the benefit is comfort and routine.
  • Tart (sour) cherry juice. Sour cherries naturally contain a little melatonin and plenty of polyphenols, and small studies are encouraging. It is also high in natural sugar, so keep to a small glass.

These drinks are not a treatment for insomnia. A drink can support a routine; it cannot fix sleep that has been broken for weeks.

When to drink, and what to skip in the evening

Give yourself about an hour: a warm drink, then phone down and lights low. A full mug right before lights out can mean a bathroom trip at 3am, so keep late drinks small.

What to avoid matters as much as what you drink:

  • Caffeine: coffee, tea (green tea and teh tarik included), cola, energy drinks and chocolate drinks. Caffeine lingers for hours, so stop by mid-afternoon if you sleep badly.
  • Alcohol: it makes you drowsy at first but breaks up sleep later in the night.
  • Late bubble tea: a tea base means caffeine, plus a lot of sugar.

RELAZZ follows the same timing: about an hour before bed, every night. You shake the sachet, tear it open and drink it all, and taking it at the same time each night helps your body settle into the routine.

Do sleep supplements work, and are they bad for you?

It depends on the ingredient and the product. Common non-prescription sleep ingredients include milk protein peptides such as Lactium®, L-theanine, GABA-rich ingredients, magnesium and herbs such as valerian, hops and sour date seed (suan zao ren). Their effects are gentler than medicine and the evidence varies by ingredient.

The real risk is the product, not the idea. Some unregistered “herbal” sleep products sold online have been found to contain hidden drugs, so look for a clear KKM status (an NPRA food classification or MAL number), published lab tests and a named maker. Prescription sleeping pills are medicines for a reason: they are used under a doctor’s care because of side effects such as next-day grogginess and dependence.

Sleep supplements without melatonin: what are the options in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, melatonin is regulated as a medicine rather than sold as a food supplement, so talk to a doctor or pharmacist instead of buying it online. Without melatonin, the usual options are the ones above: milk peptides, L-theanine, GABA-rich ingredients and herbal extracts, plus the basics of a dark, cool room and a fixed wake-up time.

RELAZZ is one such option. Each 20 ml sachet holds Lactium® milk protein hydrolysate, fermented rice germ extract, sour date seed extract, hops extract and L-theanine from corn, on a kiwi base; melatonin is not on that list. Lactium® is made from milk collected at night, and its bioactive peptide supports GABA, your brain’s calming messenger.

How is a Lactium® sleep drink different from a sleeping pill?

A sleeping pill is a medicine. RELAZZ is a botanical beverage, not a sleeping pill: SGS tested it for 365 drugs, sedatives included, and found none. NPRA classified it as a food product, and the Ministry of Health’s Food Safety and Quality Division raised no objection to its label.

It is made for every night, one sachet an hour before bed, with no dependence, and it is made to help you wake up refreshed and alert. Our page says it helps a busy mind switch off, so you fall asleep more easily, sleep deeper and wake up refreshed. Everyone is different: in box 1 your wind-down gets easier, and the page suggests one sachet every night for at least 60 nights (3 boxes). Our price is RM239 for a box of 20 sachets.

Frequently asked questions

Are sleep drinks halal? Check each product for a JAKIM logo; herbal extracts made with alcohol or gelatine capsules can matter. The JAKIM Halal certificate names AEMIS RELAZZ (MS 1500:2019), and a JAKIM panel laboratory found no porcine DNA in it.

I avoid lactose. Can I drink a milk-peptide drink? RELAZZ tested lactose-free in an ALS laboratory test, but it does contain milk protein, so skip it if you are allergic to milk.

Who should ask a doctor before a sleep drink? Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, and anyone whose poor sleep has lasted for weeks.

Is hot tea good for sleep? Only if it is caffeine-free. Chamomile and other herbal teas are fine; black, green and milk tea contain caffeine.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. RELAZZ is a botanical beverage (food), not a medicine; it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and results vary from person to person. It contains milk protein. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or have trouble sleeping that lasts, speak to your doctor first.
