It is not a sedative or a sleeping pill: it is thought to take the edge off a racing mind, so sleep can come more easily when stress is what keeps you awake. Most healthy adults tolerate it well, but ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication. In our RELAZZ sleep drink it is a supporting ingredient next to Lactium®, a French milk protein hydrolysate, in a 20 ml sachet taken about an hour before bed.
Here are straight answers on what L-theanine does, sleep versus focus, how much and safety, then how it is used in a sleep drink we sell. Where we mention RELAZZ, we quote only our Malaysia product page.
What is L-theanine?
L-theanine (say it “el-THEE-uh-neen”) is an amino acid, but not one your body uses to build protein. It occurs naturally in tea (Camellia sinensis), green, black and oolong alike, and is part of what gives tea its savoury, umami taste. Supplement makers either extract it or make it by fermentation; the L-theanine in RELAZZ is listed as coming from corn.

In Chinese it is L-茶氨酸, literally “tea amino acid”. For “L-theanine untuk apa”, see the Bahasa Malaysia summary below.
What does L-theanine do?
Its best-known effect is “relaxed alertness”. L-theanine reaches the brain, and research links it to alpha brain-wave activity, the pattern seen when you are awake but calm, and to calming messengers such as GABA. In everyday terms, people use it to:
- wind down after a stressful day without feeling drugged;
- stay calm and focused at work, often alongside coffee or tea;
- fall asleep more easily when a busy mind, not pain or noise, is what keeps them up.
The effect is gentle and studies are mostly small. L-theanine is not a treatment for anxiety, depression or insomnia; if stress or poor sleep lasts for weeks, see a doctor.
Is L-theanine for sleep, or for energy and focus?
Both, because it calms rather than sedates. In the daytime it does not make most people drowsy, so it suits a busy afternoon. At night it does not knock you out; it helps you unwind, and sleep tends to follow more easily.
That is also why it is paired with caffeine. Tea naturally contains both, which may be why many people find tea gentler than coffee. Supplement makers combine them so caffeine brings alertness while L-theanine smooths the jittery edge. If you are using L-theanine for sleep, do the opposite: skip coffee, tea and teh tarik from mid-afternoon.
In bedtime drinks it works with ingredients built for sleep. Our RELAZZ page describes it as a natural amino acid that helps you unwind before bedtime and fall asleep more easily.
How much L-theanine is typical, and is it OK daily?
There is no single standard amount: standalone capsules print their serving in milligrams on the label, and that printed serving is the one to follow. Do not double up, and ask your doctor before going higher.
L-theanine is generally regarded as well tolerated for regular use in healthy adults, though long-term research is limited. Do not stack several products that contain it. RELAZZ’s page gives no milligram figure for its L-theanine, and it is made for every night, one sachet an hour before bed, with no dependence.
What are the negative side effects of L-theanine?
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild: headache, dizziness, an upset stomach or feeling sleepier than expected. Check with your doctor first if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding, as there is little safety data;
- take blood-pressure medicine, since L-theanine may add to its effect;
- take sedatives, sleeping pills or stimulants, or any regular medicine;
- are buying for a child.
For RELAZZ specifically, it contains milk protein, so skip it if you are allergic to milk, and ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication.
How is L-theanine used in sleep drinks alongside Lactium®?
In RELAZZ the hero ingredient is Lactium®, a milk protein hydrolysate from France, made from milk collected at night. Its bioactive peptide supports GABA, your brain’s calming messenger. Each 20 ml sachet also holds fermented rice germ extract, sour date seed extract, hops extract and L-theanine from corn, on a kiwi base. Our page sums up the duo: Lactium® and L-theanine help a busy mind let go of the day, so you drift off sooner.
You shake the sachet, tear it open and drink it all, about an hour before bed. RELAZZ is a botanical beverage, not a sleeping pill: SGS tested it for 365 drugs, sedatives included, and found none. It is named on a JAKIM Halal certificate, and NPRA classified it as a food. Our price is RM239 for a box of 20 sachets.
