Do liver detox supplements work, or does the liver detox itself?
Your liver does the detox. It filters the blood, turns alcohol and many medicines into substances the body can clear and stores energy. Our product page calls it the silent organ: it does more than 500 jobs a day and seldom complains early.
“Detox” on a label has no medical definition, and no supplement has been shown to flush toxins out the way packaging often suggests. The fair claim is narrower: some ingredients may support the liver’s normal work. The popular formats:
- Liver detox juice or drink: fine as food, but sweetened juices add sugar, and a juice “cleanse” that replaces meals is not kinder to your liver.
- Liver detox tea: fine in moderation, but some “detox” teas contain laxative or diuretic herbs, so the weight you lose is mostly water.
- Liver detox drip: an IV infusion is a medical procedure; consider one only under a registered doctor who has assessed you.
- Liver detox supplement: daily support at best, and only as good as its ingredients and testing.
What do common liver-support ingredients do?
All of these have long traditional use; good human evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests.
- Milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Its seed extract, silymarin, is the best-known liver herb in Western supplements. Studies in people have given mixed results.
- Antrodia (Antrodia cinnamomea, 牛樟芝). A rare Taiwanese mushroom that grows wild only inside the stout camphor tree, 450 to 2,000 m up in Taiwan’s mountains. The Antromax® antrodia mycelium in LIVETAL is rich in triterpenoids, polysaccharides and SOD, and our page says it supports healthy liver function, your body’s alcohol breakdown and your energy. Most antrodia research so far is laboratory and animal work.
- Turmeric. Our page says turmeric extract supports the liver’s ability to break down toxins.

What is the best time to take a liver supplement?
Follow the label; beyond that, the best time is the one you will keep, because daily support only works as a daily habit.
For LIVETAL it is one sachet a day, after a meal: tear it open and drink it straight from the sachet, after lunch or dinner, whichever you never miss. The box allows 1-2 sachets a day; at one a day a box of 20 lasts 20 days. And it does not make heavy drinking safe.
Who should not take a liver supplement without a doctor?
- Anyone with a diagnosed liver condition or abnormal liver tests, including fatty liver or hepatitis. No supplement is a fatty-liver medicine; your doctor will guide you on weight, diet, alcohol and follow-up tests.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone taking medicine: ask your doctor first.
- People stacking several supplements. Herbal and dietary supplements are a recognised, if uncommon, cause of liver injury, so more is not better; yellowing skin or eyes means stop and see a doctor.
How to choose a liver supplement in Malaysia
- Know its classification. Products registered with NPRA as traditional or health supplements carry a MAL number; botanical drinks classified as food follow the Food Act 1983. Either way, the label should not promise to fix a disease.
- Look for published lab tests for steroids, heavy metals and microbes, and a JAKIM certificate if Halal matters to you.
- Buy where authenticity can be verified, such as a QR sticker on the box.
How LIVETAL answers those checks: KKM’s NPRA classified it as a food product under the Food Act 1983, which is why it has no MAL number. - Get checked: a routine blood test shows how your liver is doing.
